How to Increase Your Happiness through Writing

A lot happens around us and to us all the time. Life is busy, stressful, wonderful, scary and surprising all at once. Everything that happens to us makes us feel and think different things and effects us in unique ways. Despite all of this, many of us rarely take the time to actually think about what we have seen, learned and experienced.
Whether you are dealing with positive emotions or negative ones, good times or bad times, it is important to take the time to think about how the events of your life are effecting your thoughts and emotion. Putting down what is important to you in writing can be an excellent way to center yourself in the storm that life can be.
Writing helps you by allowing you to take stock of what is important to you. Think about it. If you were to write a series of books, or even one book about your feelings, thoughts, experiences and what you have learned, what shape would those books take? Would they express the importance of your faith, your love for your family, your dedication to your career, the value you place on education, or maybe even your love of art or what you wish to achieve? Being able to pinpoint that which is most important to you and express it can be incredibly important. After all, how can you reach goals and achieve your dreams if you do not first know what they are?
If you happen to be an expert at something, whether that’s teaching, communication, planning, a visual art, or are an expert in your field, it would definitely be worthwhile for you to write down what you have learned over the course of your successes, to help other people. One way many people find fulfillment is through service, and actively being involved in helping others. Sharing your wisdom and making sure it can be used by others can be a great way to help people. It is important that we all look out for each other. Humans are social creatures that do best and are at their happiest when they create and maintain meaningful connections with others. Being available to offer useful advice to people is a wonderful way to give back and build important relationships.
Reading and writing are also incredibly important for the health of your brain overall. The brain is like any other part of the body. It must be stretched and used each and every day in order to maintain its health. Reading and writing are an excellent way to not only maintain your happiness, but grow mentally.
Please leave a comment and let me know how writing has helped you on your journey to happiness.

July 26, 2016 at 11:23 amI have pledged to start journaling many times and I have collected several beautifully bound journals for this purpose. However, I have only taken the time to actually write in a journal when there were significant life events I wanted to make sure I remembered in detail. When I was detailed to Jackson, MS for 6 weeks to assist the hurricane Katrina recovery effort was one. My second wedding anniversary celebration was another. Each time I come across and read these recorded memories, the events play again in my head as though they happened last week. Very different experiences which were important for to me to savor the details, and solely for my personal gratification. People rarely write letters anymore, the notes in social media go to an audience far beyond our “friends” and then they fade to the background after a short time. For me, intermittent journaling and scrapbooking (I’ve done this too) are two ways for me to leave my personal thoughts and experiences for the enjoyment of my children, and their children and grandchildren.
