Losing Fat For Happiness

Have you ever felt fat? I don’t find it to be a happy feeling . Feeling overweight and unhealthy is an even worse combination. A couple of years ago I made a decision to lose some weight. I lost a total of 54 lbs. in about 5 months time. I felt more energetic, had less health problems and it even added years to my life. One drawback was that I lost weight so quickly that people started to ask me if I was ill. Then I couldn’t stop losing so I started to eat in order to put on more weight to look healthier. When that happened I put 30 of the 54 back on over about a year. So now I want to drop 15 and add 5 lbs. of muscle. This time though I’m going to go about it differently. The last time I counted calories and ran on the treadmill which caused me to lose muscle as well (don’t want that again). I’ve been reading a lot by Tim Ferriss and he has a book called the “4 Hour Body”. It has a chapter on a slow carb diet that doesn’t require much exercise to burn fat. He goes by what he calls the Minimum Effective Dose (MED) which means you do just enough to get the maximum results. You also get one cheat day a week that you get to eat whatever you want. This time I am going with low carb.. Some exercise .. And a couple of supplements (which I haven’t tried before). The reason why I’m blogging about it is because I want to be held accountable. One of the things that I find my coaching clients struggling with is being held accountable for goals they set for themselves. I figure if you keep you guys posted not only will it set an example but I will follow through with it. I plan on staying on it for a month. So here I go again.. I’m just curious, how does your weight affect your happiness?
My starting measurements are as follows:
Weight: 230 lbs.
Body fat: 24%
Total inches(waist+arms+thighs+hips): 155.6

September 3, 2014 at 12:07 pmI commend you! You can do it. I will be your cheer leader. Wish I could say I will join you but not quite ready to take the challenge. Yeah, I know you are probably saying, “why not”. Well work is kicking my but right now and when under the stress of work (writing grant specifically) I eat everything in sight. So, You Go!

September 8, 2014 at 9:54 amI don’t get why men agonize over losing weight. Biology dictates that men burn more calories then women just standing still. Once a man decides to lose weight the pounds just seem to fall off…
I know that’s not your fault.
When I’m at my goal weight I think I look better, and my clothes fit more comfortable. I’m also more flexible and feel more agile in the gym. With the extra 10 pounds I really feel heavier doing anything at all, and that impacts my overall happiness with myself.
Once when I was in the gym I told one of the trainers I needed to lose a few pounds. He responded “just stop eating sugar”. He might as well have said, “just cut your foot off”.
