Playing Dress Up Isn’t Just for Kids
Many of us spent our childhoods dressing up in princess or astronaut costumes, prancing around our backyards and exploring the world around us. While dress up seems like an awfully childish thing to do, we could all learn a lot about ourselves and how we perceive each other by trying on a few different outfits! I’ve wondered many times what types of reactions I would get if I wore any of the following uniforms:
- Marines Full Dress—The classic and formal Marines uniform is respected and recognized throughout the United States, so how would it change the way that you see me?
- A Doctor’s Lab Coat: Seeing a lab coat says a lot of things, and a lab coat would certainly make you the first person spotted during a medical emergency in public.
- A Police Officer’s Uniform: Police officers are the first ones that we call during an emergency, frequently called upon in public for their expertise, and expected to be on their best behavior at all times. How would wearing the uniform affect how people see you?
- Judge Robes in a Courthouse: Judges typically receive respect in and out of the court room, especially in a courthouse, so wearing the robes might result in more doors opened (and more m’ams and sirs!).
- Suit, Shades, and Earpiece: No matter where you go, this means Secret Service or security guard. If I wore this out in public, people might expect the President to not be far behind!
- Airline Pilot Uniform in an Airport: Whether it’s complaining about a missed flight or asking just about any airport-related question, a pilot’s uniform implies knowledge of flying and the airport (and patience for customer service).
- A Priest’s Collar: Wearing a priest’s collar might make people surprised if you let out a curse word when you stub your toe or come directly to you for spiritual advice.
- Firefighter’s Uniform: Lastly, a firefighter’s uniform might totally change how people interact with me. Aside from consulting with me about any blazes, it would imply courage and bravery to everyone who saw me.
