Mindfulness: I Have So Much On My Mind

Lately I’ve been very busy. Busy building a business, maintaining two jobs, spending time with family, spending time with friends and staying on top of my responsibilities. One thing that I notice when I become this busy is that my mind tends to race a lot. I become concerned about what I have to do next all of the time. I also become concerned with whether or not I handled certain situations correctly or incorrectly. I wake up in the morning and my mind immediately starts to recollect what I have to get done that day. When this happens I know that even though I may or may not be in a good place in my life, I am not in a peaceful place. One thing that I learned a couple of years ago is that when we spend our time thinking about what has happened it can cause depression over things we cannot change. When we spend our time thinking about what will happen in the future it can cause anxiety over what will happen. I found my most peaceful time was when I spent most of it staying in the present. Staying in the present simply means focusing on and enjoying what is going on at the moment. I heard hip hop mogul Russell Simmons say that when we get in a zone or when something happens to us like we get in a car accident or we see something happen that captures all of our attention that things can appear to go in slow motion, but they don’t. The slow motion time is the speed things actually happen around us, it’s just that in that moment our brain is so focused on that one thing that our brains slow down to that speed keeping us present and in that moment. What do you do when you find your thoughts are constantly racing? How do you slow down your thoughts? Do you feel the need to?

May 23, 2014 at 8:38 pmIt is so funny that you chose to write about this subject now. I am in a situation where I worried over the results so much that I dreamed of the possible outcomes. I came dc to the realization that I was not truly putting the situation in God’s hands and letting it go. Once I did place the matter in His hands, the anxiety and the beginning of depression subsided. I feel so much better. I am curious about what the future has in store for me pertaining to the matter, but the racing thoughts and anxiety is no where in sight.when I do find that my thoughts are racing out of control, I pray and more times than not, I declutter the space around me. Cleaning my outside world assist in decluttering my mind…and it is truly necessary.

It makes me think that even if we are feeling good, when we catch our minds racing, it is a signal to take a deep breath and slow down…

I am glad to know that I am not alone! What I have through taking up yoga this past year, when I focus on my breathing and get into a meditative state, my mind stops racing and I become relaxed and at peace. I also find my meditative state when I am running or riding my bicycle… exercise helps me focus and get into a very reflective and peaceful state.
